60 Minutes: 1997-2014

Atkins Library is excited to announce we have recently received a free one year subscription to the 60 Minutes: 1997-2014 streaming video package from Alexander Street Press. 

“60 MINUTES is one of the most successful television programs in American history. This online collection provides 350 hours of video from 17 years of broadcasts, including hundreds of segments not available anywhere else in the world. SAE International Technical Papers

SAE Technical Papers are written and peer-reviewed by experts in the automotive, aerospace, and   commercial vehicle industries. In the SAE Digital Library UNCC students and faculty can access the more than 92,000 technical papers on the latest advances in technical research and applied technical engineering information. UlrichsWeb

Are you looking for information on periodical?  Are you not sure where to look?  Atkin’s Library has the resources that can help!  We are pleased to announce that we have recently started a subscription to ProQuest UlrichsWeb!

What is Ulrichsweb?

Ulrichsweb is an easy to search source of detailed information on more than 300,000 periodicals (also called serials) of all types: academic and scholarly journals, e-journals, peer-reviewed titles, popular magazines, newspapers, newsletters, and more.

What does it include?

Ulrichsweb covers more than 900 subject areas. Ulrich's records provide data points such as ISSN, publisher, language, subject, abstracting & indexing coverage, full-text database coverage, tables of contents, and reviews written by librarians.

What are the linking options?

If your organization has enabled linking options, you can also use UlrichsWeb to explore your library's catalog or other locations where your library subscribes to serials resources.(source)

PhilPapers

“PhilPapers uses advanced trawling techniques and large-scale crowd-sourcing to monitor all sources of research content in philosophy, including journals, books, personal pages, and open access archives. Our index currently includes 1,798,467 research books and articles. Over 5,000 individuals have contributed content to our index.” (Source)

“PhilPapers' index and its archive are integrated with the largest structured bibliography in the field. PhilPapers' structured bibliography organizes half a million entries into 5,111 topics at different levels of generality. Classification is maintained by a combination of automatic classification, crowd-sourcing, and curation work done by approximately 400 appointed academics.” (Source)

PhilPapers is an Open Access Archive, however, UNCC Atkins library recently became an institutional subscriber which allows our users to link out from the database to the library collection to find the full-text or, if the library does not have, request it through Inter-library Loan.

Atkins Library is currently running a trial of Swank Motion Pictures Digital Campus!

To effectively and efficiently manage your research, you may consider EndNote, a citation management software available free to UNC Charlotte students, faculty and staff.  With EndNote you can create a customized library of all your references, organize your references into groups, and export references and PDFs from Atkins Library's databases.  EndNote allows you to insert your references into Microsoft Word, automatically creating citations and a bibliography to match the requirements of your style manual or selected journal. When working on historical research, obtaining access to primary source material is important.  In many cases, finding this material can be difficult and time consuming.  In an effort to bring some of this rare primary source material together in a cross-searchable digital format, Gale has created the Archives Unbound collection. Archives Unbound is a vast new resource of topically-focused digital collections of historical documents that support the research and study needs of scholars and students. Specifically developed to address the needs of libraries, Archives Unbound is unique not only for its expansive, multi-use content but also for the distinct new intuitive search platform by which you access it. Japanese-American Relocation Camp Newspapers: Perspectives on Day-to-Day Life

“The bombing of Pearl Harbor and the war that followed were well covered by the national press; however, little was known of the actions this nation took in regard to the Japanese-American minority population living on the West Coast. In the months following the attack on Pearl Harbor, the U.S. government was besieged with demands that action be taken against the Japanese in the form of removal from "sensitive areas" and incarceration in camps, preferably located in the interior of the U.S. These demands and subsequent actions were motivated by the fear that Japanese-Americans would become a fifth column for the Japanese military command and spy against the U.S. By April 1942, more than 100,000 Japanese persons - aliens and American citizens - were housed in what came to be known as relocation centers run by the War Relocation Authority. This abrupt uprooting not only violated the civil rights of Japanese-Americans, but also caused great financial sacrifice, since much property was sold at distress prices. Every person was allowed to take only what could be carried.” (source)

“During the 1930s, U.S. relations with Latin America and the Caribbean Growing war clouds in Europe and Asia predicated the need for securing resources and allies in the Western Hemisphere. Giving up unpopular military intervention, the U.S. shifted to other methods to maintain its influence in Latin America: Pan-Americanism, support for strong local leaders, the training of national guards, economic and cultural penetration, Export-Import Bank loans, financial supervision, and political persuasion.” (source)

DARE

Atkins Library has recently started a subscription to the online version of the Dictionary of American Regional English or DARE.  “DARE represents the full panoply of American regional vocabulary, from Adam’s housecat to Zydeco—has long been consulted by a wide range of scholars and lovers of language and regional nuance. This digital version transforms the dictionary into an interactive, multimedia tool that will greatly benefit both scholarly inquiry and general intellectual curiosity.” (source)

DARE can assist students and faculty who are doing research on American Culture or History, and need a place decipher different terms or phrases used throughout the country.  It is also a fun place to explore the dialects throughout the country.
